Legend List is a high-performance list component for React Native, written purely in Typescript with no native dependencies. It is a drop-in replacement for FlatList and FlashList with better performance, especially when handling dynamically sized items.

- Performance: Designed from the ground up and heavily optimized for performance, it is faster than FlatList and other list libraries in most scenarios.
- Dynamic Item Sizes: Natively supports items with varying heights without performance hits.
- Drop-in Replacement: API compatibility with
FlatListandFlashListfor easier migration. - 100% JS: No native module linking required, ensuring easy integration and compatibility across platforms.
- Lightweight: Our goal is to keep LegendList as small of a dependency as possible. For more advanced use cases, we plan on supporting optional plugins. This ensures that we keep the package size as small as possible.
- Bidirectional infinite lists: Supports infinite scrolling in both directions with no flashes or scroll jumping
- Chat UIs without inverted: Chat UIs can align their content to the bottom and maintain scroll at end, so that the list doesn't need to be inverted, which causes weird behavior (in animations, etc...)
For more information, listen to the Legend List episode of the React Native Radio Podcast and the livestream with Expo.
Beyond standard FlatList capabilities:
recycleItems: (boolean) Toggles item component recycling.true: Reuses item components for optimal performance. Be cautious if your item components contain local state, as it might be reused unexpectedly.false(default): Creates new item components every time. Less performant but safer if items have complex internal state.
maintainScrollAtEnd: Keeps the list pinned to the tail when the user is already near the end (withinmaintainScrollAtEndThreshold * screen height). Passtruefor all triggers, or{ animated?: boolean, on?: { dataChange?: boolean, dataAppend?: boolean, footerLayout?: boolean, layout?: boolean, itemLayout?: boolean } };dataAppendfollows only additions that preserve existing item keys in order. Ifonis omitted, the object form also enables all triggers.onUserScroll(experimental): Runs once per accepted user gesture, including inferred native accessibility scrolling. See the API JSDoc for supported input, gesture grouping, and native commands that requirecancelScroll().maintainVisibleContentPosition: Keeps visible content steady during size/layout changes while scrolling up or when items resize above the viewport (default). Passtrueor{ data: true }to also anchor during data updates; passfalseto disable JS size/data stabilization; pass{ size: false }to opt out of scroll-time stabilization. Native iOS maintainVisibleContentPosition is enabled when either size or data stabilization is enabled, and disabled when both are disabled.alignItemsAtEnd: (boolean) Useful for chat UIs, content smaller than the View will be aligned to the bottom of the list.

)
}
export default LegendListExampleInside their thresholds, onEndReached and onStartReached fire again when the data length changes, or when a new data array arrives and the content size differs from the size at the last callback. A new array with the same length and content size does not re-arm an edge. An empty page that leaves both unchanged does not automatically request another page.
A new user gesture toward an edge can retry unchanged data inside its threshold. If the current array already received a callback for changed content, that delivery counts toward the next gesture; a later gesture can retry it. Keep the data reference stable between updates to preserve that duplicate-callback protection.
While the scroll offset stays unchanged, row measurements, loading footers and other layout changes do not re-arm an already reached edge, even if they temporarily move it outside its hysteresis band. Scroll-offset changes, including MVCP compensation and native clamping, retain the existing distance-based reset behavior. Empty data fires neither callback.
scrollToOffset({ offset }) and initialScrollOffset use raw native scroll offsets, like React Native's ScrollView. With a vertical iOS contentInset.top of T, the resting start is -T: use scrollToOffset({ offset: -T }) or initialScrollOffset={-T} to request it. An explicit 0 still requests native offset 0, subject to the reachable content bounds. Omitting the initial target starts at -T.
scrollToEnd() lands at -T when the content plus both insets fits within the viewport. Start thresholds and distanceFromStart measure from this resting start.
React DOM lists can use an ancestor element's scrollbar with scrollElement:
import { LegendList } from "@legendapp/list/react";
import { useState } from "react";
function History({ swaps, renderSwap }) {
const [scrollElement, setScrollElement] = useState<HTMLDivElement | null>(null);
return (
<div ref={setScrollElement} style={{ height: 600, overflow: "auto" }}>
<ProfileHeader />
<LegendList
data={swaps}
renderItem={renderSwap}
keyExtractor={(swap) => swap.id}
scrollElement={scrollElement}
/>
</div>
);
}Use a state-backed callback ref so the list receives the element after mounting and whenever it changes. null waits for an external element; undefined keeps the default list-owned scrollbar. The element must be an ancestor of the list. Keep the list's own height unconstrained so its content contributes to the parent's scroll range.
Multiple lists can share the same element, including lists in separate columns. Each uses the owner's viewport on the scroll axis and its own width/height on the cross axis. Content above the list is accounted for automatically, including preceding content that resizes. scrollToIndex, scrollToOffset, and scrollToEnd remain list-relative and move the shared owner.
maintainVisibleContentPosition anchors changes to the list's own rows; it does not freeze the layout of surrounding content. An offscreen list does not pull the owner back into view to apply a measurement correction.
useWindowScroll continues to use the browser window. Both modes share the same web implementation; scrollElement takes precedence when provided. As with window scrolling, external mode does not configure the owner's scrollbar styling or CSS snapping. It is not supported with renderScrollComponent.

There's not a ton of code so hopefully it's easy to contribute. If you want to add a missing feature or fix a bug please post an issue to see if development is already in progress so we can make sure to not duplicate work π.
