Use an SSR-safe layout subscription.
A descendant render-time prefetch can complete after commit but before passive effects flush. The current React.useEffect subscription then misses the success event, so no unused-prefetch timer starts.
An unconditional React.useLayoutEffect can emit React 18's server-rendering warning. QueryStrictMode is not client-only in development. Select React.useEffect on the server and React.useLayoutEffect on the client.

yeah feels like we would need useSyncExternalStore here?

@TkDodo Yes—useSyncExternalStore fits if we expose the tracking state as a store with a stable snapshot. React can detect a snapshot change between render and subscription. React docs
But replacing useEffect with useSyncExternalStore alone would not recover missed success events. The store must retain enough state to identify eligible prefetches and their completion times. It must also preserve the exclusions for manual writes and queries fetched before mounting.
My layout-effect suggestion only narrows the subscription window. It does not recover earlier events. A snapshot-backed tracker would address that gap more reliably, with getServerSnapshot for SSR.

great work 🙌
I’m generally thinking if we should widen the StrictMode to also work on non-suspense queries? Like, an unused prefetching for example doesn’t matter if it’s suspense or not. And having a normal query "trigger" the fetch without prefetching is also not ideal for non-suspense. Yes, for suspense it’s worse because it can waterfall easily, but would be good actually to either have this report on everything or have it be opt-in. Maybe it should report on anything and can be filtered out during logging?

… prefetches in development - 'missing-prefetch': a suspense hook inside 'QueryStrictMode' starts its fetch during render - 'unused-prefetch': a prefetched query isn't read within 'unusedPrefetchTimeout' (5000ms) - 'throwOnMissingPrefetch' and 'throwOnUnusedPrefetch' throw a 'QueryStrictModeError' to an error boundary instead of logging - Only renders 'children' in production Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…in 'QueryStrictMode' 'useQuery', 'useInfiniteQuery', and 'useQueries' now report a 'missing-prefetch' when they start the initial fetch of a query that wasn't prefetched. The event gets a 'suspense' flag so a logger can filter for the suspense hooks, which cause request waterfalls. Each query state is only logged once, so rendering twice before the fetch starts (for example in 'React.StrictMode') doesn't log twice. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…yStrictMode' misses 'QueryStrictMode' subscribes to the query cache in a passive effect, so it misses prefetches whose data arrives before that effect runs. These tests render outside of 'act' to show the gap after a render-time prefetch, while a sibling suspends the first mount, and in 'React.StrictMode'. They also show that changing 'unusedPrefetchTimeout' drops pending timers, and guard against a false report for a prefetch that a component reads once 'QueryStrictMode' commits. Four of these tests fail until the subscription gap and the timer leak are fixed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…ndles Gate the 'useQueryStrictMode' and 'checkQueryStrictMode' calls in the hooks, and the context creation, behind the 'NODE_ENV' check, so bundlers drop them in production builds. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ueryStrictMode' handler The default handler now throws a 'QueryStrictModeError' to an error boundary instead of logging with 'console.error'. Pass a 'handler' that returns to log problems instead. Reorganise the JSDoc for the generated reference docs: what each problem means moves to 'QueryStrictModeEvent', where a throw goes moves to 'QueryStrictModeHandler', and the 'QueryStrictMode', 'QueryStrictModeError' and 'handler' prop docs are shortened to link to them. …tModeError' JSDoc Fixes the 'jsdoc-js(tag-lines)' oxlint error. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…tMode' handler Missing prefetches still throw a 'QueryStrictModeError', since they cause request waterfalls. Unused prefetches only waste a request, so the default handler now logs them with 'console.warn' instead of throwing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ssingPrefetch' and 'handleUnusedPrefetch' A throw from the single 'handler' went to a different error boundary for each type of problem, and overriding it to filter one type meant reimplementing the default for the other. Each problem now has its own handler and default: 'handleMissingPrefetch' throws, and 'handleUnusedPrefetch' logs with 'console.warn'. The events are split into 'QueryStrictModeMissingPrefetchEvent' and 'QueryStrictModeUnusedPrefetchEvent', a union discriminated by 'type', with 'suspense' only on missing prefetches. 'QueryStrictModeError' becomes the base class of 'QueryStrictModeMissingPrefetchError' and 'QueryStrictModeUnusedPrefetchError', which carry the 'event' they were created for. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…its own file 'QueryStrictModeDev.tsx' holds the context, prefetch tracking, default handlers and checks, and is only imported behind 'NODE_ENV' checks, so production bundles leave the whole file out. The types move to 'QueryStrictModeTypes.ts' and the errors to 'QueryStrictModeError.ts', which keeps the imports free of cycles that would merge the files into one chunk. 'QueryStrictMode' becomes a single conditional expression, so esbuild also drops 'DevQueryStrictMode' in production. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ueryStrictMode' A nested 'QueryStrictMode' without its own 'handleMissingPrefetch' used the default handler, so wrapping part of the tree in a bare 'QueryStrictMode' made it throw even when the parent only logged. It now uses the handler of its parent, and the default only applies at the top. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…n file 'QueryStrictModeContext.ts' holds the context, 'useQueryStrictMode' and a 'QueryStrictModeProvider', like 'IsRestoringProvider.ts'. The hooks read the context from there, and 'QueryStrictModeDev.tsx' only holds the development checks. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…' tests Use 'mockReturnValue', 'toStrictEqual', typed 'vi.fn' and 'not.toBeInTheDocument' for the lint rules enabled on main, and drop the manual 'mockRestore' calls that 'restoreMocks' already handles. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
