A stored entry whose value is null, {} or {"state":null} deserializes fine but has no state, so restoreQueries and persisterGc threw a TypeError and left the entry in storage — the remaining (valid) queries were never restored. Invalid JSON was already handled by removing the entry, so malformed JSON is now treated the same way: deserializeStoredQuery validates the shape and drops the entry, which also covers retrieveQuery and removeQueries.

Closes #11918.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Malformed persisted query data is removed instead of causing errors during retrieval, restoration, removal, or cleanup.
    • Deserialization failures and invalid entries are handled consistently, allowing valid saved queries to continue processing.
    • Entries without a valid query key, query hash, or state are discarded during restoration and cleanup.
    • Valid persisted queries—including those with cached null data—continue to restore normally when malformed entries are present.

📝 Walkthrough

The persister validates deserialized entries and removes entries that cannot be parsed or lack valid query fields. Retrieval, garbage collection, restoration, and removal use this handling. Tests and a patch changeset cover the update.

Rebased on latest main — the PR had gone conflicting after #12116 touched createPersister.ts.

Conflicts were documentation-only on main's side (the JSDoc that has since been added to retrieveQuery and AsyncStorage); I kept those docs and placed isPersistedQuery / deserializeStoredQuery alongside them, rather than dropping them for the PR's older copy of the file. One behavioural detail from main is preserved: the guard is still storedData != null, so an empty-string entry is deserialized (and dropped by the new shape check) instead of being skipped silently.

Local run of packages/query-persist-client-core: 64 tests passing, no type errors.

43-50: Duplicate: isPersistedQuery checks only state.

A previous review comment already flags this validator. It accepts entries that lack queryKey, queryHash, or buster. The new tests do not cover these cases.

Two concrete consequences follow:

  • restoreQueries calls queryClient.setQueryData(persistedQuery.queryKey, ...). If queryKey is missing, the restore can throw or write to a wrong key. This is the failure the PR aims to fix.
  • retrieveQuery returns state.data for an entry with a fresh dataUpdatedAt and a matching buster. The entry stays in storage.

Validate queryKey (array) and queryHash (string) here. Keep state.data === null valid.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Add test cases for entries that have a state object but lack other fields.

The malformed inputs cover only null, {}, and {"state":null}. They do not cover a value such as {"state":{}} or {"state":{"dataUpdatedAt":...}} without queryKey. Add such a case once the validator checks the remaining fields. The case also verifies that valid data: null entries still restore.

Cover restoration of legitimate null data.

The current test persists 'foo', so it would pass even if restoreQueries rejected a valid persisted query with state.data === null. Add a focused null-data case.

Added the null-data case in 77a4631. restoreQueries now also persists a query whose data is null, clears the client and asserts the value comes back as null with the entry still in storage — so a cached null can't be mistaken for a malformed entry by the new shape check. It fails if the check starts rejecting null data, which is the boundary I wanted pinned.
