The desktop app's Ace Helper menu items and window chrome don't do what their names suggest.
What was seen (Canary 0.0.51.85)
Ace menu → "Ace Helper Settings…" opens macOS System Settings → Login Items, where the entry is "Ace Canary.app", not Ace's own Settings → Ace Helper (^19).
Restart Ace Helper shows "Updating Ace Helper…", which reads like an update is being installed, and doesn't warn that running work stops. Stop does warn (^17).
Show Ace Helper Log only reveals helper.log in Finder inside the hidden ~/.local/state (^18).
The green and yellow title-bar buttons report themselves disabled. There's no Window or Help menu, so no Minimize or window list; zoom works only by double-clicking the top strip, which looks like tab and header space (^652, ^658).
Check for Updates… gives no sign it's running; only the timestamp changes (^13).
Providers says "Saved in Keychain" for an OpenAI key that Check then reports as "OpenAI rejected this API key.", and Refresh gives no feedback (^53).
The "Ace Helper Settings…" label (apps/desktop/src/index.ts:187), "Updating Ace Helper…" (apps/app/src/host-settings.tsx:140) and the Login Items call (apps/desktop/native/service.m:32) are unchanged on main.
Steps
Ace menu → Ace Helper Settings….
Settings → Ace Helper → Restart.
Hover the window's green button.
Expected: the menu item opens Settings → Ace Helper (with Login Items as a link there), Restart says "Restarting…" and warns about running work, and the standard window buttons work.
Rig: mac (Ace Canary 0.0.51.85 through Desktop Tools).
