Adds objectDetails []ObjectStatus to ObservedPhase, listing incomplete objects with their failure messages during Reconciling, Pending, and Archiving phases. Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Status information now includes details for individual objects that are still incomplete during reconciliation or teardown.
Object details identify each object and can show why it is waiting or failing, including pause reasons, ownership conflicts, probe failures, and outstanding deletions.
When available, diagnostics include the specific fields that were added, changed, or removed. Output is limited to 50 objects and 18 messages per object.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Observed phase status now includes bounded object details. Reconciliation reports incomplete objects and their diagnostic messages, while teardown reports objects awaiting deletion.

The API, apply configurations, and CRD schemas add object identity and diagnostic messages to observed phase status, with limits on list and message sizes. Deep-copy methods handle the new slices. The API reference file only gains blank lines.
Reconciliation and teardown status details internal/object-controller/status/status.go, internal/object-controller/status/status_test.go
Status generation adds details for incomplete objects and objects awaiting deletion. Messages include pause, ownership, probe, and comparison details, with message count and length limits. Tests cover phase behavior and diagnostics.
The new object-status fields still have reported API lint failures, so the change needs correction before merge. The teardown description should also be fixed so users can understand Pending deletion details.

Initialize the first observed phase status.
buildBoxcutterPhases creates phases without Status. An early return before status.FromReconcile can therefore leave the required field empty, so JSON serialization omits it and the status update can be rejected. Initialize it to ocv1.PhaseStatusUnknown.

Reject current phase names that are absent from stored observed phases.
verifyObservedPhases accepts an equal-length replacement such as old → new because it compares digests only for names found in the stored map. In both reconciliation and teardown, the status updater then appends the new result without a Digest. The CRD requires a non-empty Digest, so the status write can fail validation.

Correct the objectDetails description for teardown phases.
UpdateObservedPhasesForTeardown can add "awaiting deletion" details to Pending phases. Update the comment to cover Pending in both reconciliation and teardown, then regenerate the CRDs and manifests. The checked-in API reference does not contain this field description, so API-reference regeneration is not applicable to this change.

Two follow-up notes from the original review. Both still reproduce at f70b771, and both are now inherited from main after the rebase. The mixed-ownership completion issue has been fixed, so I omitted that finding.

[P2] Empty phases are incorrectly marked Superseded
For a valid phase with objects: [], boxcutter reports both IsComplete() and HasProgressed() as true: its progressed-object count and object count are both zero. This selects Superseded, so the phase never receives CompletedAt, even when the revision rolls out successfully. Guard the superseded calculation for empty phases and add a regression case expecting Ready and a completion timestamp.
Reproduced using boxcutter's real phase engine and validator with -race. This remains present at f70b771 and is now inherited from main after the rebase; flagging it for follow-up.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P2] Recoverable preflight failures report a permanent invalid specification
Related follow-up in the earlier validation-error branch: PhaseValidationError also wraps recoverable dry-run failures such as missing RBAC permissions or a dependency CRD that has not propagated yet. That branch labels all of them InvalidSpecification, documented as a permanent failure, while the revision controller reports PreconditionsNotMet and retries. Preserve the recoverable distinction in phase status and cover a forbidden dry-run response with a regression test.
Reproduced with boxcutter's real phase validator and a writer returning Forbidden. This remains present at f70b771 and is now inherited from main after the rebase; flagging it for follow-up. Anchored here because the validation branch is outside the current diff.

Nice PR! We may want to enforce size constraints on the aggregate status in a follow-up PR.
Just the API lint and API diff checks left to fix! Once those are fixed, LGTM!
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The per-object caps still allow combined diagnostics across objects and phases to exceed etcd's size limit, causing the entire status update to be rejected. We should address an overall diagnostic byte budget in a follow-up PR. What about a TODO beside this cap to track the follow-up?
Something like:
Suggested change
iflen(msgs) ==0 {
// TODO: Cap total diagnostic bytes across all phases.
iflen(msgs) ==0 {
Or fine also if we just remember without any comment :-)
Thanks for reviewing @fgiudici ! I'll work on a follow-up for the size constraint issue.
To be honest though, we will likely need to override the lint-api-diff and go-apidiff checks.
For lint-api-diff, the fixes it suggests go against our API conventions; namely, omitempty tags on required fields and asking for optional fields to be made into pointers.
For go-apidiff, I don't think we need to worry about incompatible API changes, because we're still in experimental. But I'll defer to @perdasilva on those points since he's the one that needs to override them.
