Description

Adds phase-level status tracking to ObservedPhase:

  • Status (PhaseStatus enum): Invalid, Pending, Reconciling, WaitingForAssertions, Available, Unknown, Superseded, TearingDown, TeardownComplete
  • CompletedAt: timestamp of first Available transition
  • Message: phase-level human-readable context

Introduces the PhaseStatus type and four new Ready-condition reason constants. Updates status.go to compute and populate all three fields on every reconcile and teardown pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • ClusterObjectSets now report per-phase rollout statuses, transition and completion times, and messages capped at 1,024 characters.
    • Phase status fields are available through API configurations and CRD schemas.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Phase status and object counts are updated during reconciliation and teardown, including paused objects.
    • Completion timestamps are preserved once recorded.
  • Documentation

    • CRD descriptions clarify that synced counts are zero during teardown.

ClusterObjectSet observed phases now include required status and transition time fields, plus optional completion time and message fields. Reconciliation and teardown update phase statuses and object counts. Generated API configurations, deepcopy code, and CRD schemas reflect the updated contract.

Observed phases gain a status enum, required transition time, optional immutable completion time, and a message capped at 1,024 characters. Apply configuration setters, deepcopy behavior, and CRD schemas reflect these fields. The synced count descriptions specify zero during teardown.
Reconciliation and teardown status updates

Status helpers assign phase statuses and messages, update object counts, and preserve or set completion timestamps. The controller passes captured timestamps to the helpers. Tests cover status mappings, counts, timestamps, and message truncation.

What if there are multiple objects in this phase, each with different messages worth reporting? Will we have a separate object-level status struct?

Currently, in Ready, Superseded gets set once any object has transitioned. We should also make a decision here. The issue at the revision/object set level is that we may not ever have all objects transitioned (some may not be present in the next revision)...

So you're saying that in a given phase we may have both objects that have been superseded by the subsequent revision and some that have been archived instead? If we aren't avoiding the use of Progressed terminology we could set that as a more broad condition when both Archived and Superseded apply to the same phase.

Good point @dtfranz. The assumption here is that there is no use to differentiate between "Superseded" and "Archived", as once the objects are either taken over or deleted it changes nothing for the Phase: seems clear that the assumption holds to me, making it explicit to double check.
For the term, I would consider keeping "Superseded" but with the meaning of Daniel's "Progressed".

I mean, for example, rev-1.phase-1 has objects {a, b, c, d} and rev-2.phase-1 has objects {a, b, c}

rev-1.phase-1 will never has a HasTransitioned() == true because object d isn't present in rev-2. So, I'm wondering whether a phase is superseded once any of its objects is now owned by a subsequent revision.

To me, Superseded feels like "all objects from this phase that needed to be adopted by the next revision have been adopted by the next revision". An outcome of this would mean that a phase that has no objects in a higher revision is Superseded as soon as we process that phase and see that there is nothing to hand over.

And if we need a present tense phase, then Superseding would be "at least one object from this phase has been adopted by a higher revision"

Archiving/Archived is different. That is about cleaning up any leftover objects after everything shared has been handed over.

Re: superseded versus archived

  • COS controller is what initiates supersession.
  • COD controller (or other COS owner) initiates archival/deletion

So we definitely need the COS controller to distinguish between those two things. It is totally possible for a fully superseded COS to remain active indefinitely.

yeah - superseded really should be what you said. The problem is that there's no way for the COS to know when that's happened (unless its also trolling throw the statuses of the later revisions). Feels like a bit of extra complexity for now. But, maybe it wouldn't be too bad 🤔

580-581: Past review comments already cover two points on these lines.

  • completedAt type: CompletedAt is still *metav1.Time with omitempty. The repository convention requires a value type with omitzero. A status-level immutability CEL rule is also still missing.
  • status requirement: status is still +required. A legacy controller during a rolling update can write observedPhases entries without it, and the new schema rejects those updates.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Map phase validation errors before completeness status.

FromReconcile maps phase results before the controller handles pres.GetValidationError(). A named phase result with a validation error can therefore become Reconciling, Stabilizing, or Ready. The later PreconditionsNotMet condition update does not change ObservedPhase.Status.

Set the phase status to PreconditionsNotMet for this controller path. Reserve InvalidSpecification for errors explicitly classified as permanent.

Initialize ObservedPhase status before storing currentPhases.

buildBoxcutterPhases creates entries without Status or LastTransitionTime. The first reconcile stores them before CreateRevisionEngine, establishWatch, or revisionEngine.Reconcile can return an error. The normal phase updater also returns without changing phases when the revision has a validation error.

The empty Status value violates the CRD enum and can cause the status update to fail. The zero LastTransitionTime also does not represent a valid phase transition.

Initialize each phase in the empty `ObservedPhases` branch before assigning
`currentPhases`: set its `Status` to `ocv1.PhaseStatusUnknown` and its
`LastTransitionTime` using the controller clock (`c.Clock.Now()`). Then store
the initialized phases in `cos.Status.ObservedPhases`.

…atus

Adds phase-level status tracking to ObservedPhase:
- Status (PhaseStatus enum): InvalidSpecification, PreconditionsNotMet, Pending,
  Reconciling, Stabilizing, Ready, Unknown, Superseded,
  Archiving, Archived
- CompletedAt: timestamp of first Available transition
- Message: phase-level human-readable context
- LastTransitionTime: marks time of last phase status change

Introduces the PhaseStatus type and new Ready-condition reason
constants. Updates status.go to compute and populate all three fields
on every reconcile and teardown pass.

[P2] Preserve phase totals when revision validation fails

With the same ConfigMap referenced by two phases, boxcutter returns a RevisionValidationError and no phase results. Returning here before populating the spec-derived totals leaves both phase totals and the aggregate ObjectCounts.Total at zero, instead of 1 per phase and 2 overall. The affected phases also remain Unknown, although InvalidSpecification documents cross-phase duplication as an example.

Please populate the spec-derived totals before returning and use the revision's phase validation errors to set the affected phases' statuses and messages. Reproduced with boxcutter's real revision validator; the total-count check passes against the base implementation.

[P2] Count Ready only for objects included in Synced

An ActionProgressed result can have IsComplete() == true, for example when no progression probe is configured. This increments Ready, while the ActionProgressed branch only increments Present. A one-object superseded phase therefore reports {Total: 1, Present: 1, Synced: 0, Ready: 1}. The API defines ready objects as objects that are synced and pass their assertions, so these counts contradict that contract.

Please increment Ready only for objects also counted as Synced. Reproduced using boxcutter's object, phase, and revision engines; the Ready <= Synced check passes against the base implementation.
